EU Commission proposes simplified environmental legislation to boost sustainable growth

The European Commission has unveiled a new legislative package aimed at simplifying environmental laws to reduce administrative burdens for businesses and public authorities while maintaining high levels of environmental and health protection.

The “Environmental Omnibus” initiative includes multiple proposals to streamline environmental assessments and permitting, modernise reporting requirements, update industrial emissions rules, improve circular economy provisions, and enhance access to geospatial data.

The Commission expects the changes to generate around €1 billion in annual administrative savings and to support strategic projects in areas like digital infrastructure and affordable housing. This effort forms part of the broader Competitiveness Compass agenda to make EU regulation more efficient and growth-friendly.
