CBAM: challenges ahead for Europe's technology sectors

Last week, Orgalim's Policy Director Daniel Wennick presented Orgalim's CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) impact assessment study during the CECE Technical Commission meeting in Brussels.

CBAM, a tax on imports of carbon-intensive materials like steel and aluminium, exemplifies the EU’s well-meaning yet counterproductive policies. The administrative and financial burdens placed on European companies significantly undermine the competitiveness of Europe’s machinery manufacturers.

As highlighted in the Orgalim paper, the transition period has already validated many of the concerns raised by industry stakeholders, underscoring the urgent need for mitigating measures before CBAM is fully implemented. While discussions on improving competitiveness and re-industrializing Europe continue, CECE believes it is crucial to address these clear instances of competitive disadvantage and take steps to prevent further erosion of our industrial base.
