CECE participates in the European Commission’s Machinery Working Group
On the 25th and 26th February, CECE participated in the European Commission’s Machinery Working Group, a meeting that brings together European Commission’s officers, Member States’ Market Surveillance authorities and industry stakeholders to discuss implementation issues and the future revision of the Directive 2006/42/EC on machinery.
The two-day discussion allowed CECE to monitor recent developments and to provide a feedback on a quantity of important topics for our members, including standardisation work, safety concerns arising from quick couplers, the European Commission’s policy options to be analysed for the revision of the Machinery Directive and the resilience of future health and safety legislation against the challenges of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and new technologies.
In this context, Orgalim made a presentation about its comments for the upcoming Impact Assessment of the Machinery Directive based on a recently published position paper. CECE participated in the Orgalim discussions providing input to the document and the specificities of the construction equipment sector.
The position paper looks at the definition of the ‘narrow’ artificial intelligence and how this technology is used in the mechanical, electric and electronic industries today. It also explains how the current Annex 1 of the Machinery Directive continues to meet its objectives regarding safety and trust, whether or not a piece of machinery incorporates AI elements.
We invited Orgalim to present the topic during our next CECE Technical Week in March. Full Orgalim Position Paper is available here.
