The Swedish Presidency of the Council unveil the political programme for the six months ahead

On 14th December, the upcoming Swedish presidency of the Council of the European Union presented its political priorities for the next six months. Sweden will indeed assume the Council Presidency on 1st January 2023.

According to the Swedish Presidency programme, themes like security, economic resilience, green & energy transition, and democratic values (such as rule of law and fundamental rights) will occupy a central stage of their political priorities.

Please find below further details about the legislative priorities of the upcoming Presidency relevant for the construction machinery equipment industry. 

Internal market and industry
In the area of industry, the Swedish Presidency identified as priority file the Commission’s initiative on critical raw materials. In addition, the programme announces the intention of the Presidency to initiate negotiations in the Council on the review of the Euro 7 emissions standards for combustion engine vehicles.

Telecommunications
In the field of artificial intelligence, the Swedish Presidency is keen to initiate trialogues negotiations with the European Parliament and make as much progress as possible on the related legislative file.

The Presidency also intends to contribute to the implementation of the European Data Strategy: the Swedes will take over the work on the Data Act in the Council, initiate negotiations with the European Parliament and advance such negotiations as far as possible. Same approach is announced on the Cyber Resilience Act. In addition, the Presidency will continue negotiations with the European Parliament on the ePrivacy Regulation.

Environment
The Swedish Presidency will continue the negotiations on a revised Regulation on F-gases, with the ambition of making as much progress as possible on the file. In addition, the revision of the Industrial Emissions Directive represents a priority.
