Since 1st of January 2018, Bulgaria is holding for the first time the six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union. While they are not yet in the Eurozone or the Schengen free movement area, this presidency marks the country’s 10 years of EU membership.
This presidency’s topics will encompass the building of consensus on security and migration, the future of the Western Balkans in the EU, and delivering fairer justice systems. They are also seeking to develop a competitive single market based on digitalisation, fairer and more efficient taxation, and the removal of trade barriers to enhance cross-border services. The Bulgarian Presidency will also strive for an open debate on the future of Cohesion Policy and its role in the implementation of the EU’s priorities after 2020. Bulgaria will also aim to start the discussions on a future of EU long-term industrial strategy.
In the vision of creating a stronger, more united and more democratic European Union. Bulgaria's Presidency four core priorities are:
- The future of Europe and young people, with a focus on economic growth and social cohesion.
