REACH revision – The public consultation is open

On 20th January the European Commission launched the public consultation on the targeted revision of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH Regulation). Stakeholders have until 15th April 2022 to provide the input. The public consultation includes ‘expert’ questions covering more technical points of the regulation.

The overall objective of the revision is to assure that REACH answers to the European Commission’s ambition ‘on ‘innovation for safe and sustainable chemicals and a high level of protection of health and the environment, while preserving the internal market’. The revision will cover all phases of the REACH regulation, from the revision of the registration requirements and substance evaluation to the reforming of both authorisation and restriction processes. Therefore, the public consultation tackles all those points and collects feedback on the registration of certain polymers of concern and information on the overall environmental footprint of chemical.

Finally, it will gather views about the Introduction of (a) Mixtures Assessment Factor(s) (MAF), the simplifying communication in the supply chains and the revision of provisions for control and enforcement.

The REACH revision is part of the Chemical Strategy for Sustainability adopted in October 2020 and the European Commission’s proposal is expected in the fourth quarter of 2022.
